This past summer I was a part of the inaugural internship program for Carnival Cruise Line. I was able to live onboard for three months while traveling around the Caribbean. Throughout my time onboard, I visited ten different ports of call, created and implemented programs, and made some of the most amazing connections with people from all walks of life.
Carnival Cruise Lines is the world's most popular cruise line based on the number of guests who sail with us. We have headquarters in Miami and contact centers in Miramar, Florida, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Carnival offers cruise vacations from 20 North American homeports to breathtaking destinations that include Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Bermuda, South America, Tahiti, The Fiji Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Mediterranean, Norway, the Baltic and the British Isles. Carnival's vision statement is, "To Consistently Deliver Fun, Memorable Vacations at a Great Value." As an Entertainment Host, I was responsible for implementing programs, activities, and events throughout the durations of each cruise. I was a facilitator for debarkation during ports of call and final debarkation. Lastly, I worked the weddings that take place onboard, acting as the emcee for the event. The events and activities we as an Entertainment Staff put on are as followed:
Being an intern for Carnival, the benefits are amazing. The internship is a paid position that comes with possible bonuses and incentives. For any weddings or vow renewals worked, you receive pay. In addition, you get to visit amazing ports, have free room and board, and work with a diverse demographic of people every week! The living quarters are no suites but they do the job. There is also crew excursions, like bobsledding in Jamaica or zip lining in Belize, themed crew parties, and all you can eat ice cream! Who wouldn't love that? Requirements for this position are minimal but important. One that wants to work as an Entertainment Host must be an outgoing, upbeat person that can command the attention of a crowd. For my application, I was asked to create a short demo video highlighting my microphone skills and crowd involvement methods. The job largely takes part on a stage so one must have a strong stage presence and clear diction. Education wise, a high school diploma is required, but having a degree that is applicable to the position will makes the applicant more desirable. Working as an Intern for Carnival has given me so much more than I originally anticipated. I have clocked more than 400+ hours on stage building my stage presence. While facilitating debarkation, I mastered how to effectively control a crowd. Lastly, I have grown my network exponentially both internally and externally of the company. My biggest take away I got from my time with Carnival is a contract to work for them full time after graduation. Once you have been employed by Carnival, it is very easy to continue within the company. I highly suggest this internship to those interested in working on cruise ship or within the cruise industry.
